The Church
Winckworth Sherwood has been working in the ecclesiastical sector for more than 100 years. This gives us a depth of experience and understanding of church matters that few other legal firms can match.
We advise on every kind of issue that churches may face, including parish re-organisations, marriage law, appointment of clergy and the highly complex area of land and property. The key areas in which we can help include ecclesiastical law, constitutional matters, property, employment and litigation. With our long experience we also understand the wider context – the unusual jurisdictional framework which makes church matters such a unique challenge for lawyers.
Our ecclesiastical practice is one of the largest in the UK: we advise five Church of England dioceses: London, Southwark, Rochester, Chelmsford, and Oxford and, through our Oxford office, the Anglican Consultative Council and the Archbishop of Canterbury. We also advise the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster and Diocese of Brentwood, together with very many local parishes.
Past and present experience gives Winckworth Sherwood a real empathy with ecclesiastical clients. It means we can deliver the kind of fast, sympathetic and relevant service which church clients need, and get to the heart of the matter quickly and efficiently. With this long history, focused expertise and a clear commitment to clients, Winckworth Sherwood plays a full part in supporting the church communities of England and Wales.
