The Voluntary Sector

Winckworth Sherwood has a long history of acting for voluntary sector organisations, particularly in the religious, education and social housing sectors.

Many of our lawyers have worked within their specialist areas either as legal advisers or in a voluntary capacity, gaining hands-on experience of management and strategic issues. This equips us to provide intelligent, practical advice that adds value to the client organisation.

We aim to work in close partnership with client organisations, often building up long-lasting relationships. Our advice is always based on a clear understanding of the contexts within which our clients operate, as well as the immediate matter in hand.

Charities are subject not only to the general law (for example, employment, property and contract law) but also to the requirements of charity law, in order to secure public benefit and satisfy the further regulatory requirements of their sector. Our familiarity with, and active involvement in, these sectors means that we can provide relevant, high quality and cost-effective advice, meeting all of our clients’ legal needs using a dedicated team of specialist lawyers who are familiar with all aspects of the environment in which clients work.

We have recently acted on a major redrafting of the constitution of a well-known national charity, merged two charities, advised on the repositioning of a national charity wishing to change the way in which it provides its services, and advised a charity during a Charity Commission investigation. We regularly advise charities on the particular requirements of charity law in the acquisition and disposal of property.

We can provide a highly specialised, friendly and effective legal advice service, tailored to the particular requirements of your organisation.
